One of the most important activities of RLIFA is welcoming visitors from our Sister Cities to Rice Lake. In the summer months, we host cultural exchanges or English language camps for Zamberk and/or Miharu students or adults. These events are typically up to two weeks long, and area families host our visitors in their homes.
Each school year, we welcome students from Zamberk and Miharu to Rice Lake where they attend Rice Lake High School. Students live with area families, typically for 4-5 months at a time. Students participate in the same types of activities American kids do--sports, extra curricular activities, music programs, youth groups, etc. Host families take these ambassadors into their homes as family members. Students are expected to participate in family activities, help with household chores, and follow family rules. This immersion in American family life gives these young people a truly American experience!
If your family is interested in being a host family for a short-term summer visitor or an exchange student, we would love to hear from you! Hosting is a great way to give your own family a global perspective without traveling. Out-of-pocket expenses are minimal, and the rewards can last a lifetime! RLIFA is hosting a trip to Miharu, Japan in the spring of 2017. Anyone interested in more information on the trip should contact Mary Hankins.
